NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS OF CAPTIVE MODEL TEST USING OPENFOAM(R)
Nowadays numerical simulations play an important role in shipbuilding industry. As a part of such trend, Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) developed HiFoam based on the OpenFOAM® to evaluate resistance and self-propulsion performances of a ship accurately and efficiently [1]. The HiFoam has been widely used in Hyundai Maritime Research Institute (HMRI) for designing hull and appendages as well as evaluating ship performances as a supplementary tool of towing tank experiments. However, the HiFoam was focused on static performances of a ship while demand for prediction of maneuvering performance is increasing. In the present study, we modified the HiFoam to simulate the captive model test and the numerical simulation results are compared with planar motion mechanism tests which are performed at the HMRI.
