“Enabling High-Fidelity CFD on the Cloud through AWS”

High Fidelity CFD methods such as hybrid RANS-LES and WMLES approaches offer the potential for much greater trust in CFD in typical engineering design processes and lays the foundations for a fully virtual design process. Dr. Neil Ashton, Principal CFD Specialist at Amazon Web Services will explain how AWS is making this a reality for small to enterprise customers. He’ll go through detailed examples of the use of OpenFOAM on AWS from a range of sectors including large-scale cases using more than 500 million cells on thousands of cores.

It has been my pleasure to marvel at the impact of OpenFOAM in the academic and industrial setting over the last 25 years. The code is now more popular and with a greater impact than ever envisaged; consequently the most interesting developments and examples of OpenFOAM in use warrant special attention.

In this talk, I will review some new features and examples of good (and bad) community activities during the last year.

Without doubt, since its first release in 2004, OpenFOAM has changed the paradigm of academic research and engineering analysis-based use of CFD in industry. It owes its existence primarily to a prior generation of genius physicists and mathematicians who brought CFD to the trust-level it enjoys today, and also to a following half-generation of able successors who continue to develop and “productionise” it’s use. It is now a code which is used across the spectrum from fundamental research to the highest production readiness level (TRL).

OpenFOAM’s future is entrusted to us all as Opensource. Collective participation in any such project is key to driving its longevity. Conversely, fracturing contributes to limited sustainability and outreach. It is incumbent on us to participate in the maintenance and continuous development of this project, to retain its free-availability and open-source nature which also permits contributions on a prolifically wide and unrestricted but quality controlled basis.

Since ESI acquired OpenCFD seven years ago, it has taken pains first to consolidate a professional basis for regular code releases, next to create a development framework for wider acceptance from all able contributors, and finally to give OpenFOAM end-users a principle say in its direction. This as OpenFOAM Governance; without exception you are invited, perhaps expected, to participate.
