City and Region wonders

Genoa is the capital of the Liguria Region, in the northwest of Italy: with its 580.000 inhabitants, it is the sixth-largest Italian city, famous for having one of the most important seaports in the Mediterranean Sea.

Genoa is located in the center of the Ligurian Riviera, a narrow coastal strip in Italy which lies between the Ligurian Sea and the mountain chain formed by the Maritime Alps and the Apennines. As a tourist centre, the Ligurian Riviera benefits from over 300 days of sunshine per year, and is known for its beaches, colorfully painted towns, natural environment, food, and luxury villas and hotels, as well as for its popular resort facilities.

Here you can find out some other surprising wonders about Genoa:

  • Several buildings on UNESCO World Heritage list.
  • The new “old harbour” was designed by Renzo Piano.
  • Cinque Terre (UNESCO World Heritage), picturesque sea villages, are little more than one hour away (by train)
  • Genoa aquarium is the largest in Italy and the largest exhibition of aquatic biodiversity in Europe.
  • Great native food (such as pesto sauce, farinata, and focaccia)
  • Genoa’s Lighthouse Tower
